The first Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) was established at Princeton University. Based on the Princeton model, the Freiburg Institute for Advanced Studies continues this pattern of transatlantic exchange as the international research college of the University of Freiburg. As an integral part of the university, FRIAS unites under its roof the humanities and social sciences as well as medicine, the natural and life sciences, and engineering.

Since 2013, 54 FRIAS fellows have come from American institutions. This networking breakfast will reconnect with FRIAS fellows in northeastern United States, strengthening their ties with the University of Freiburg (especially after the pandemic limited travel) and present an opportunity for exchange with top American scholars about the role of Institutes of Advanced Study in addressing challenges in American and German societies. Through this exchange, scholars will mutually consider how these institutes address broader knowledge gaps, and what is/was learned from German and American models.

This event will also coincide with the Friends of Freiburg University annual dinner, which will benefit the programs of FRIAS. Speakers will include:

  • Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein, Rector of the University of Freiburg
  • Prof. Dr. Ralf von den Hoff, Executive Director of FRIAS
